Holy Face Roman Catholic Church Parish Cemetery occupies an undivided portion of the larger Holy Face Church property at 20408 Point Lookout Road, Great Mills, MD. The larger portion comprises 22.4 acres in total. The Little Flower School Property occupies roughly 9.4 acres of the entirety, with the Parish Cemetery currently occupying about 2.85 acres.
The Holy Face Parish Cemetery is divided into five sections, largely corresponding to the internal roadways providing access. These are shown in the image below:
The Holy Face Parish Cemetery commenced operation sometime in the 1920s, coincident with planning for the construction of a new rectory, school and church building on the site. The first marked burial site at Holy Face is that of John T Cecil, a former St. Mary's County Commissioner, who reportedly donated the property on which the church, cemetery and school are found today. John Cecil died on April 1927, and is interred in the Cecil family plot at Section 2, Row 2, grave 371, among other family members. Burial of other parishioners followed shortly thereafter.
Over the past century, the cemetery has been built out, now encompassing over 1550 burial sites. Burial sites are not evenly divided among the sections, but reflect the following distribution:
Of note, Section 4 of the cemetery is said to comprise the then-traditional site where deceased Black parishioners and infants were buried. Memorials in Section 4 are scant, with only about 59 of nearly 300 burial sites having a headstone. Based upon direct observation, it appears that numerous unmarked graves reside in section 4, with many areas evidencing soil subsidence consistent with use as burial sites.
Prior to 1980, operation and maintenance of the cemetery was handled by the parish. Around 1980, Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese assumed responsibility for the management of lot sales and coordination of all interments. It is believed that all records with respect to burial site ownership were transferred to Catholic Cemeteries at the time of transfer in or about 1980. Sale of new sites has been limited by Catholic Cemeteries to section 5.
General maintenance and moving of the cemetery grounds is conducted by the Holy Face Parish Knights of Columbus Council 3849.
